Christmas is one of the most anticipated holidays of the year. Every year, millions of people around the world begin counting down the days until December 25. Whether you’re planning Christmas decorations, shopping for gifts, organizing a family gathering, or simply excited for the holiday season, knowing how long until Christmas can make the wait more fun.
When Is Christmas?
Christmas Day is celebrated every year on December 25.
For many people, the Christmas season starts weeks before Christmas Day. Some begin decorating their homes in November, while others wait until December to put up the Christmas tree and decorations.

The exact amount of time remaining depends on your current date, time, and location. That’s why a live countdown is useful—it can automatically calculate the remaining days, hours, minutes, and seconds.

Why Do People Count Down to Christmas?
Counting down to Christmas has become a fun holiday tradition. A countdown can help build excitement as Christmas gets closer.
People use Christmas countdowns for many reasons, including:
- Planning Christmas shopping
- Preparing gifts
- Organizing holiday parties
- Planning family gatherings
- Decorating the house
- Preparing Christmas meals
- Getting ready for Christmas travel
- Building excitement for Christmas morning
For children especially, watching the countdown get smaller can make the holiday season even more exciting.
Christmas Countdown: Days, Hours, Minutes and Seconds
A Christmas countdown doesn’t have to show only the number of days remaining. A live countdown can break the remaining time into:
Days → Hours → Minutes → Seconds
For example, if there are 10 days remaining, the countdown can show the exact number of hours, minutes, and seconds left until Christmas.
Because the countdown depends on your local time, the exact number will change continuously.
What Day Is Christmas 2026?
Christmas Day 2026 falls on a Friday.
That gives families and friends a chance to plan Christmas celebrations around the holiday weekend.
Christmas Eve
Christmas Eve takes place on December 24, one day before Christmas Day.
Many families celebrate Christmas Eve with special meals, gatherings, church services, movies, traditions, or gift exchanges. Others use the evening to prepare for Christmas morning.
